Description of records: The Studio Art Building Committee was formed to select an architect for the College's W.L.S. Spencer Studio Art Building, and to oversee issues of project development and design. Architect Carlos Jimenez was chosen for this project and worked with Cambridge Seven during construction of the building. The Spencer Studio Art Building was dedicated in April 1996.

The records are divided into three major sections: correspondence, subject files, and architects' proposals. Correspondence and memoranda include information solicited from and provided to donors, the architect, committee members, and members of the larger College community. Subject files relate to a variety of topics: design and safety issues, razing of the Williamstown Opera House, proposals and reports, selection of the architect, and dedication of the building. Architects' proposals contain materials supplied to the Committee from a variety of architects as well as Carlos Jimenez, the project finalist.

Appraisal note: Removed from the in-coming collection were photographs, blueprints and site plans, and several publications regarding the art program at Williams.   These were integrated into the Photograph Collection, Blueprint Collection, and reading room collections respectively.
