1910born March 30 in NYC to Irving Van Zandt and Maybelle Young Van Zandt
1927graduates from Phillips Exeter Academy
1931graduates from Williams College, majoring in French
1932marries Helen B. Westermann of Ossining, NY February 6
1932-42enlists in U.S. Army after basic training attends Chemical Corps Officer Candidate School in Maryland, graduating as a Second Lieutenant
1943-44serves as a chemical warfare instructor to members of the French Army in North Africa
1944-45becomes Aide de Camp to Penoral A.F. Kingman, Commanding General of French training; in this position, he travels throughout North Africa, Corsica, and the Italian front as the general makes his inspections in October 1944, the unit is called to Paris to train the liberated manpower of France, Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg
1945awarded the Bronze Star and the Croix de Guerre by the French government
1946honorably discharged form the U.S. Army with the rank of Captain hired by the marketing and opinion research form of Benson & Benson, Inc. in Princeton, NJ
1946-63remains active in the Reserves, finally retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel
1960graduates from the U.S. Army Command and Staff College, the Army's senior tactical institution, after which he becomes one of the college's instructors
1973becomes President of Benson & Benson
1975retires and moves to Nashua, NH
1991dies at the age of 81 in Nashua on July 8
