Introduction

MSS#: MC 44

Processed by: Claudia Hill, December 1996

Total Volume: 5 boxes: 4 lin. ft.

Provenance: The Rice collection was donated to the Williams College Archives in 1988 by gift of Richard Ashley Rice, Jr. and Marianne R. Zagorski, grandchildren of Richard Austin Rice. The collection was originally grouped together with those of Rice's son, Richard Ashley Rice (d. 1959), a Professor at Smith College, and sent to that institution in 1988. The two archives were separated by the Smith College Archivist who forwarded the relevant boxes onto Williams College. The collection has been arranged to facilitate access. Correspondence relating to the collection is located in the accession file.

Conservation: All material in the collection has been re-housed in acid-free folders and boxes. Photographs were humidified, flattened and encapsulated in mylar sleeves. All photographs were copied onto acid-free paper, as were fragile documents. A typed list identifying the photographic images, and the reproduced images, are appended as Appendices A and B respectively. The contents of the card catalogue were also copied onto acid-free paper and appended as Appendix C.
