Provenance: The Papers of James Bissett Pratt, Mark Hopkins Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy, were donated to the Williams College Library by his wife, Catherine Mariotti Pratt, primarily in the 1940s and 1950s. After the unorganized materials were arranged and described by Kristen A. Petersen, additional correspondence and writings were received, and Mrs. Leavitt Howard donated reprints of Pratt's work. These later materials, housed in boxes 57-58, form an addendum to the Papers.

In 2005, material from Pratt?s personal library, consisting of works which were not integrated into the main library holdings, were reviewed for duplicates and items that were considered out of scope for the collection. These included both books and journals. The duplicates and out of scope materials were separated in November of 2005. Materials kept in the collection include reprints; photocopies of articles that were written by Pratt, but not reprinted; and original issues that contained annotations by Pratt, but not in articles written by him. The journals were de-accessioned and the books were given to the Chapin Library or Sawyer Library, depending on their nature and content.
