Scope and Content Note
The major areas of interest in the Papers of Robert B. Muir (hereafter RBM) are the many certificates and awards he earned in his career as swimmer and Williams coach, as well as an extensive collection of photographs spanning his life. There are few personal references in the collection, nor is there much documentation of his wife, Ione, or family. Correspondence is almost exclusively between RBM and professional contacts, friends in the swimming world, and students keeping in touch with their former coach. His photographs and awards chronicle the history of the Williams College Swimming Team, the 1956 Olympics in Australia where RBM was head coach of the U.S. Swimming Team, and events at the Lawrence Beach Club. The collection is organized into four series: Correspondence and Other Papers, Photographs, Scrapbooks, and Artifacts.
