Provenance: The material in this collection was maintained as part of the records of the President's Office. Material from the U.S. Fuel Administration office had been transferred to the Williams College President's office in 1919. The Presidents' records, which had been stored in various places on campus, were transferred to the College Archives in 1994.

Conservation: Material was rehoused in acid-free folders and boxes. Rusty paper clips were removed. Newspaper clippings and brittle papers were photocopied onto acid-free paper. Photographs were removed, rehoused in acid-free folders and added to the Archives' photo collection. Supplementary publications were separated from this collection. A list of supplementary publications used for lectures is included with Series II. A list of supplementary publications used by Garfield as U.S. Fuel Administrator is included with Series III.
