The Thomas Nelson Dale Papers, 1854-1933 , comprise photographs, sketchbooks, a journal, lecture notes, various publications and miscellaneous other papers pertaining to the life and work of Thomas Nelson Dale (1845-1937). Dale spent most of his childhood in Europe and there became interested in geology. This interest would eventually lead to his career with the United States Geological Survey as well as to various teaching positions. Dale also gave frequent public lectures and published a number of books and pamphlets. Most of these were of a scientific nature. However, Dale also took an interest in philosophical and religious matters as some of his writings demonstrate. The collection is divided into three series: Papers from Childhood, Professional Papers and Personal Papers.
