Series Descriptions

Series I: Church Records has been arranged into three subseries.

Subseries A. Official and Administrative Materials, 1779-1961. Contains official church minutes and records, financial accounts, correspondence relating to the 1935 incorporation, marriage records, an undated seating plan, and other records relating to the management of church affairs.

Subseries B. Church Literature, 1887-1959, includes church publications, as well as preliminary drafts. Included are Articles of Faith, By-Laws, handbooks and manuals, reports and directories, as well as membership lists.

Subseries C. Correspondence, 1834-1850, includes Reverend Gridley's letter of resignation, as well as correspondence from parishoners in 1850.

Series II: Miscellaneous and Collected Materials has been arranged into two subseries.

Subseries A. Sermons and Discourses, circa 1808-1868, includes a sermon delivered by President Griffin, as well as Mason Noble's Centennial Discourse and his journal of church related events from 1865.

Subseries B. Miscellaneous Collected Materials, 1793-1892, contains a record of psalms learned by member Laura Seymour, as well as a piece of the church bell recovered from the 1866 fire. Also included is a Manual from the Church of Christ in the White Oaks, established in 1865 as a house of worship for the college community and led by Prof. Albert Hopkins, who was also serving as pastor for the Congregational Church.
