Emma Walker Armstrong was Samuel Chapman Armstrong's first wife, and her papers, 1858-1878, comprise chiefly correspondence from her husband, sister, and a few close personal friends and relatives. Schoolgirl compositions, personal journals and accounts are included here, as well as biographical materials. Armstrong's letters to Emma are primarily love letters and include brief details of his travels, fundraising activities, and Hampton events. (Emma's letters to her husband may be found among the Personal Papers of Samuel Chapman Armstrong.) Emma's other correspondence includes news of family and friends' health, travel and financial matters, as well as news of Hampton and Stockbridge, Massachusetts affairs. For further biographical material regarding Emma, see Mary Anne Longstreth's "Recollections of Emma Walker Armstrong..." among the papers of Louise Armstrong Scoville.
