Committees and Meetings (1907-1933)1 Linear Ft. Contents List
The Committees and Meetings Series contains records of the Athletic Council (1907-1926,1931) and the Committee on Commencement Arrangements (1909-1933), both joint committees with administrative responsibilities. Files are organized chronologically within each committee.
The Athletic Council files include primarily correspondence and reports. The Athletic Council's membership included alumni, faculty and undergraduates. The Council approved athletic programs, schedules, eligibility policies, and awards. Some of the issues addressed include eligibility for the varsity baseball team (1911), compensation for coaches (1925) and the introduction of intramural soccer (1911).
Material documenting the Committee on Commencement Arrangements consists mainly of President Garfield's correspondence concerning honorary degrees, commencement speakers and invitations. Newspaper clippings and lists of honorary degrees and prizes are also included in this material. The Committee on Commencement consisted of the Dean, the Treasurer, the Secretary of the Alumni and four members of the faculty. The Board of Trustees did not formally create the Committee on Commencement until 1922 when it was charged with revising the commencement program. Prior to this, the President, Board of Trustees, President of the Society of Alumni and members of the Committee on Degrees all collaborated on commencement arrangements. Much of the early correspondence is with H. P. Dewey, a trustee, who scheduled speakers for the Baccalaureate service and Haystack Meeting for many years. (See also Committee on Degrees)
